THE HISTORICAL-GEOGRAPHICAL SUBJECT AND
THE PHILOSOPHY TO BE DONE / IL SOGGETTO STORICO-GEOGRAFICO E LA FILOSOFIA DA FARE
A cura di Prisca Amoroso
In an enigmatic working note written in 1960, Merleau-Ponty sets forth what appears to be the program for a philosophy yet to be developed, for which the author asserts the necessity of engagement with geography understood historically. The earthly intertwining of history and nature, which such a philosophy identifies, takes on transcendental significance, for it shapes the subject’s horizon and defines the possibilities of thought. Transcendental Geology, then, seems to take shape as a philosophy capable of including the unthought among its objects and of coming to terms with the limits of corporeality, redefining the notion of the subject without renouncing it.
